PIVX: A True Digital Alternative to Cash
When people hear the word cryptocurrency, most think of Bitcoin. Today, however, Bitcoin primarily serves as a digital store of value and a speculative asset. It has several disadvantages for everyday payments: standard transactions are not instant, fees can vary depending on network congestion, and above all, it is not anonymous. The Bitcoin blockchain is public, and anyone can view and analyze its transaction history.
PIVX was created with a different goal. It is not intended to be merely an asset that people buy and hold in the hope that its price will rise. It is designed as a fast, private, and decentralized means of payment – in simple terms, as a digital alternative to cash.
Why Bitcoin Is Not Digital Cash
When you pay with a banknote, the seller does not need to know your account balance or the history of your previous purchases. Cash naturally protects the privacy of both parties. Bitcoin is different: every transfer is recorded in a public database called the blockchain.
A Bitcoin address may not be linked to a particular person's name at first glance, but once that link is established – for example, through a purchase on an exchange that requires identity verification – the flow of funds between addresses can subsequently be tracked. Bitcoin is therefore more accurately described as pseudonymous rather than anonymous.
Speed is another issue. Bitcoin creates a new block approximately once every ten minutes, and larger payments often require several confirmations. This method of payment is not ideal for buying coffee, lunch, or a ticket.
PIVX Protects Financial Privacy
PIVX offers protected transactions through SHIELD technology, which is based on zk-SNARK cryptography. It enables the network to verify that a transaction is valid and that the sender has the necessary funds without publicly revealing sensitive payment information.
This is a fundamental difference from most common cryptocurrencies. With a protected payment, the sender, recipient, and transferred amount do not have to be visible on the public blockchain. Privacy does not rely on trusting a bank, payment app operator, or another centralized company, but on cryptography and the rules of a decentralized network.
It is important, however, to use the correct type of wallet and select a protected transaction. PIVX also supports transparent transfers, which are not private. Furthermore, no technology can protect users who disclose their own identity, wallet address, or other payment information.
Payments Without Waiting for a Bank
The PIVX network creates a new block approximately every 60 seconds, significantly faster than Bitcoin. It is designed for fast transfers and everyday payments, so the recipient can see a submitted transaction almost immediately, and its confirmation usually follows shortly afterward.
A payment also does not need a bank's approval. Opening hours, weekends, and whether the recipient lives in the same country do not matter. All that is needed is a compatible wallet and an internet connection. Funds can be sent directly from one person to another without a card company or a traditional bank transfer.
PIVX combines several characteristics that are rarely found together in digital payments:
- fast transfers worldwide,
- the ability to protect payment information,
- low transaction costs,
- no central bank or company that owns the network,
- the ability to hold funds in your own wallet,
- more energy-efficient security through Proof of Stake.
Why the Need for Internet Access Is Not a Major Obstacle
Like online banking, payment terminals, and most modern checkout systems, PIVX requires an internet connection for normal use. At first glance, this may seem like a disadvantage compared with banknotes and coins. In reality, however, today's businesses already use online cash registers, accounting systems, card terminals, and electronic communication with government authorities.
If mandatory online electronic sales records are reintroduced in the Czech Republic in the future, businesses accepting conventional money will also need a connection. The internet is therefore not a weakness specific to PIVX, but a standard part of today's payment environment. This distinction is important: the original Czech Electronic Sales Records system (EET) was abolished in 2023, so it cannot be described as a generally applicable current obligation unless new legislation actually takes effect.
A Network Without Energy-Intensive Mining
Bitcoin secures its network through mining, in which specialized computers consume large amounts of electricity. PIVX uses a Proof of Stake system. Users who hold PIV and help operate the network participate in verifying transactions and creating new blocks.
As a result, PIVX does not require vast facilities filled with mining equipment. Users can also stake their coins, help secure the network, and earn rewards for doing so. These rewards are not a guaranteed return, however, and the value of the cryptocurrency itself can fluctuate significantly.
Who Controls PIVX
PIVX is an open-source project governed by its community. It has no single owner, central bank, or company that can arbitrarily change users' balances. The project's development is supported by a decentralized governance system and a community treasury. The masternode network votes on proposals, and approved projects can receive funding directly from the protocol.
This does not mean that PIVX cannot face technical, economic, or regulatory problems. It does mean, however, that the network's rules are not under the direct control of a single company.
How to Use PIVX
You can begin by installing a supported wallet and securely storing its recovery phrase or private keys. Whoever possesses this information controls the associated funds. It is therefore essential to make a backup, never send it to anyone, and keep it out of other people's reach.
To make a payment, the recipient displays an address or QR code, the sender enters the amount, and then confirms the transaction. If the payment is to remain private, a wallet that supports SHIELD must be used and a protected transfer selected. Before using it for the first time, it is sensible to send a small test amount.
Digital Money Designed to Be Used
PIVX is not trying to be just “another Bitcoin.” It focuses on the qualities that genuinely usable digital money should offer: speed, low costs, independent control over funds, and above all, the ability to protect financial privacy.
Bitcoin demonstrated that money can exist without a central bank. PIVX brings this idea closer to everyday payments. It offers a model in which value can be sent directly, quickly, and, when used correctly, privately – without the whole world having to see whom you paid, when, and how much.
PIVX is a true digital alternative to cash: private, fast, and available to anyone with an internet connection.
